VAIL, Colo. – Led by a pair of quality rounds from Sarah Harrison and Judith Castro, Troy fired its best round of the week with a 9-over 297 as the Trojans wrapped play at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Harrison and Castro both carded a 1-over 73 at Red Sky Golf Club in Wednesday's final round.
Harrison carded four birdies on the day and reached 2-under at one point through the round as she tied for 47thplace to lead the Trojans in their second event of the season. She finished the tournament with nine total birdies which also paced Troy's five golfers.
"Those were the fastest greens that our team has ever seen," head coach Randy Keck said. "They were tour greens with tour speeds and tour slopes. The golf course played really hard and we didn't handle it very well, especially yesterday. We had a terrible round of golf, it happens and I'm just glad it happened early in the year."
Castro rebounded from a tough opening two rounds to shoot 1-over on Wednesday thanks to three birdies and just three over-par holes; she finished the week tied for 83rdplace. Nicole Lorup finished a couple shots back of Harrison in a tie for 54thplace after a 4-over in the final round.
"Today was a good turnaround, and I'm proud of them," Keck said. "I was proud of their effort today. They bounced back and battled their tails off. It was a shame that we had to have such a poor round of golf to get their attention."
No. 1 UCLA won the event with a Golfweek Challenge record 32-under par team score, including an 18-hole record 17-under in the final round. Pepperdine, Denver, Campbell and SMU rounded out the top five.
Bianca Lohbauer, who tied for 64th, carded her second-straight 75 to close out the week on a positive note and Lindsey Harrison tied for 80thafter firing an 83 on Wednesday.
It will be a quick turnover for Troy as the Trojans travel to Greensboro, N.C., this upcoming Monday and Tuesday for the Starmount Forest Fall Classic.
