Troy Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker
9/21/2018 11:00:00 PM | Soccer
TROY, Alabama – A mere 35 seconds stood between Troy and its second straight Sun Belt Conference victory on Friday, but Appalachian State scored to tie the game then went on to land the game-winner in the second overtime period to hand the Trojans a 3-2 loss at the Troy Soccer Complex.
Trailing 2-1, Appalachian State (4-4-1, 1-0 SBC) mounted what was likely its last offensive attack as the clock ticked under one minute in regulation. Kat Greer corralled a loose ball at the top of the penalty area and shouldered off a Troy defender to slot the game-tying goal.
After 19 minutes of overtime, Blair Anderes intercepted a driven Trojan free kick, evaded a defender and riffled a shot into the net to end the game. Troy (2-8-1, 1-1) created several chances in overtime, but failed to convert on its six shots in overtime.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the 17thminute when freshman Alisa Detlefsen volleyed a low cross from Natalie Melillo past the keeper for her first career goal. Appalachian State tied the game three minutes later when a free kick from the midfield stripe bounced over the Troy defense in the 6-yard box and into goal.
Melillo gave the Trojans the lead once again in the 64thminute when her shot from the right wing slipped through the keepers' legs at the near post. The senior now has three goals and three assists on the season.
