HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Troy soccer earned an important road point on Sunday afternoon, playing to a 2-2 draw against Southern Miss.Â
The win gives Troy seven points in Sun Belt play, good for a five-way tie for eighth place in the conference with four matches to play.
Troy (3-8-3, 2-3-1 SBC) received goals from Irene Torres and Brooke Ogorek, while taking 15 shots, tied for its second-most this season. Taylor Richards was important in goal, making six saves throughout the match.Â
Southern Miss (5-5-3, 2-3-1) played from behind the majority of the match, scoring equalizers in the 50th and 84th minute.Â
Troy earned the first quality chance of the afternoon, winning a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Isabella Hartofelis put the Trojans' first shot of the afternoon just over the bar.Â
Southern Miss' first shot of the match came in the 19th minute, as Olivia Tribolet raced past the Trojan defense and had a free run to the net. Richards stood tall, coming off her line and making her first save of the match.Â
Troy opened the scoring in the 26th minute courtesy of first-year forward Torres. Torres chased down a pass from Melanie Oldner and fired a left-footed shot past the Southern Miss goalkeeper. The goal marked Torres' third of the season.Â
Both teams created chances for the remainder of the half, with Southern Miss holding an 8-4 advantage in shots at the break while Troy maintained its 1-0 lead.Â
Southern Miss drew level in the 50th minute, as an inswinging service went off the head of a Troy defender, falling to Argentina Estrada, who was able to send the volley into the back of the net.Â
Troy regained the lead in the 66th minute off a corner kick. Brooke Slater's delivery bounced around the box before falling to Ogorek, who played the ball off her body and fired a one-timer into the top-left corner for her first career goal.Â
The Golden Eagles equalized once again in the 84th minute, as Tribolet found the top-left corner with a right-footed strike.Â
Both teams recorded two shots in the final five minutes, but neither found a winner as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.Â
Quotable – Head Coach Jake WymanÂ
"Disappointed to not get all three points. A few tough decisions went against us today. Had our chances to put them away and let them hang around long enough to snatch a point from it. I'm proud of the girls' efforts. It was a hot and difficult game."Â
