TROY, Ala. – For the third Friday night in a row, Troy volleyball went to five sets in a tournament opener but fell to Kennesaw State in a heartbreaker to open the Troy Classic.
Troy (4-6) got off to an extremely hot start with a dominating set one win over the Owls (8-4) – running out to a 11-2 lead before most of the crowd at Trojan Arena could even find their seats.
The Trojans tallied 12 kills as a team in the first set – with three apiece from Cheyenne Hayes and Belle Waldrop. Hayes finished as the only player with double-digit kills (17) and extended her streak of consecutive games with double digits to eight.
The two opponents traded sets back-and-forth over the next couple of frames before KSU was able to pull away with the 3-2 victory – Troy inched within a set of victory after a 25-21 win in the third set but fell in the final two.
Freshman setter Amara Anderson recorded yet another double-double with 40 assists and 12 digs in the match. Anderson led the Sun Belt coming into the weekend with 374 assists and 11.33 assists per set.
Troy got another strong freshman performance from Halston Hillier – who posted seven kills and a hitting percentage over .300 in the match.
Quotable – Troy head coach Josh Lauer
"Great volleyball in Trojan Arena tonight. We ran into an eventual top 50 team in Kennesaw State and they just came off playing one of the top teams in the country last weekend. I think our team had a chance to choose their identity tonight – I thought they chose to battle and get after it. But we've got to let this one go and come back with that same intensity and fire tomorrow."
