TROY, Ala. – Troy volleyball bounced back from a morning loss to Florida A&M to defeat rival Jacksonville State in the five-set finale of the Troy Classic at Trojan Arena Saturday.
The Trojans (5-7) split the two matches to finish in a tie for second place in their final non-conference tournament of the season. Freshman Lacey Jeffcoat was Troy's representative on the all-tournament team.
Game One
To kick off the day, Troy matched up with Florida A&M (1-13) who was previously winless on the 2018 season. The Rattlers did not play like an 0-13 team, however, and took advantage of costly Trojan miscues to win the match in just four sets.
The Trojans, who entered the weekend ranking 36th nationally with 1.73 aces per set, uncharacteristically committed 16 service errors in the match with just two aces.
Jenni Young posted a new season-high with 16 kills and attacked at a solid .344 percentage to lead the squad. Freshman Halston Hillier stayed hot with 10 kills and a .318 attacking percentage in the match.
Game Two
Led by Cheyenne Hayes' team-best 22 kills in the match, Troy broke a five-match losing streak
with a knock-down, drag-out victory over Jax State (7-6).
The Trojans jumped out quickly on the Gamecocks winning the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-22. However, JSU responded with its back against the wall and dominated the third and fourth frames to send it to five.
The two long-time rivals traded blows in the deciding set before Troy's relentless effort finally paid off with a four-point rally to clinch the game. Freshman Lacey Jeffcoat epitomized that effort, making several diving digs to keep points alive for the Trojans – she finished with a team-leading 16 digs in the match.
