TROY, Alabama – Behind Natalie Melillo's second half goal, Troy edged out a 1-0 win over Louisiana on Friday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Trojans (2-6-1, 1-0 SBC) opened conference play with a win for the third consecutive season and second straight under head coach Ged O'Connor.
Troy looked primed to break through early with five of its seven chances coming in the first half. Melillo and Kendra Cashion both had runs on goal, but had their shots saved. The Trojan defense held the Ragin' Cajuns (1-6-2, 0-1) to just three shots in the first half and five in the game with only one being on target.
Melillo gave Troy the game-winner in the 52ndminute when she received a pass on the right wing from Alisa Detlefsen and sent a cross into the box that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the top left corner of goal. It was the second goal of the season for Melillo and the first career assist of the year for Detlefsen.
Freshman goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus recorded her Sun Belt-leading third shutout of the season.
