JACKSONVILLE – The Troy soccer team looked to be in good form on Thursday trouncing Jacksonville, 2-0, at Southern Oak Stadium to open the 2018 season.
Troy (1-0) used an aggressive offensive attack to pressure Jacksonville (0-1) from the start outshooting the Dolphins on target 5-1 at halftime and 9-4 in the game.
Maddie Brune opened the scoring for the Trojans in the 25thminute when she collected a deflected ball off a corner inside six-yard box and knocked it home. It was the fourth goal of the junior's career.
Kate Lorenz nearly nabbed her first goal of the year in the 51stminute, but her shot rebounded off the crossbar. However, senior Natalie Melillo was there to clean it up registering her sixth career goal as a Trojan to double Troy's lead.
The shutout was the first for freshman goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus, who finished the game with four saves. As a team, Troy led the Sun Belt with eight shutouts last season and have blanked 39 of its last 83 opponents.
