TROY, Ala. – Troy University's men's golf, women's golf and women's cross country programs received Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) program for the 2016-17 academic year.
All three programs recorded perfect 1,000 APR scores for the reporting period. This marks the fourth-straight year that the women's golf program has earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award, while women's cross country earned the award for the second year in a row.
"We experience a great sense of pride when our student-athletes succeed on the academic level," Troy Athletics Director Jeremy McClain said. "It is a tremendous accomplishment to be recognized among the top 10 percent of programs nationally for work in the classroom and one that everyone associated with Troy University and Troy Athletics should be proud of. We strive every day for our student-athletes to be prepared for life after athletics, and we could not be more delighted for the young men and women associated with these programs."
A total of 1,284 teams were recognized for academic performance by the NCAA, including 827 women's teams and 457 men's teams or co-ed teams, an increase of 98 teams from a year ago.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 academic years.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 23. All teams must maintain an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
