Outdoor Dominates Alabama Track Challenge

BIRMINGHAM – Troy outdoor track and field took home eight individual event wins for the second weekend in a row, this time at the Alabama Track Challenge hosted by Samford.

The meet featured teams from around the state, including Alabama, South Alabama, Miles, Samford and Troy.
Â
Troy saw most of its success on the field side of the competition, bringing home five of the eight wins there. Indiya Summerville was the most impressive, throwing the shot put 14.78 meters to win the event and set a new school record.
Â
A few personal bests were set by event winners. Michael Alvernaz set a new career-best mark of 62.25 meters in the hammer throw, while Titus Sizemore jumped higher than he ever has before with a 2.10-meter high jump.

Rounding out the field winners were Connor Brookman – with a 55.53-meter javelin throw – and Jaevyn Wortham – with a 48.62-meter discus toss.

The Trojans looked strong on the track, as well; winning three events there. Brennan Garriques brought home the win in the mile, Alexis Garrett emerged victorious in the 100-meter hurdles and Mackenzie Walsh finished first in the 3000-meter run.

Troy will return to action next weekend at the prestigious Florida Relays hosted by the Gators in Gainesville.

Notable
• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.

• Troy indoor track and field placed fifth at the conference championships in February, tying for the highest finish in program history – finished fifth twice before.
Â
• No days off. The Trojans will compete in at least one meet each weekend from now until the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in San Marcos, Texas, May 11-13.
