TROY, Ala. – Amara Anderson set the school's freshman assist record and Troy clinched a Sun Belt Tournament spot despite falling in a tough-fought, four-set match to division champion Appalachian State in Trojan Arena Friday night.
Â
Anderson recorded 43 assists to break Troy's freshman record of 1,129 assists set by Megan Henderson in 2007 – she now sits at 1,141 in 2018. The Trojans (10-18, 4-11) also worked their way into the conference tournament with Georgia State's loss to Georgia Southern.
Â
Troy has now reached the conference tournament in each of head coach Josh Lauer's first two seasons with the program. It marks the first time the team has advanced to the postseason in consecutive seasons since the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Â
16 of Anderson's 43 assists came from Cheyenne Hayes kills, as the sophomore snapped for her fourth match in a row with at least 16 kills. Hayes also had 15 digs to post her 11th double-double of the season.
Â
Troy was also gifted to a couple of big nights from Avery Cason and Jenni Young as both recorded nine kills. Defensively, Lacey Jeffcoat led the team with 19 digs – one of four players in double digits in the category.
Â
On the night dedicated to her, senior Logan Page threw down eight kills with a .231 hitting percentage while tallying three total blocks – two assists and one solo.
Â
Appalachian State (20-7, 12-3) clinched the East Division title with the win and the second seed in the conference tournament next week in Atlanta. The Mountaineers were led by Beck Porter's 40 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.
Â
