TROY, Ala. – Troy knocked off defending Sun Belt champion Coastal Carolina in five sets to conclude the regular season at Trojan Arena Saturday night.
Â
Cheyenne Hayes' career-high 23 kills led a gritty Troy (11-18, 5-11) team past the Chanticleers (12-12, 11-5) in a back-and-forth five-setter – Hayes also recorded 11 digs and served two aces in the match.
Â
After Coastal knotting things at 10 apiece in the fifth set, freshman Amara Anderson served five straight points with a couple of Hayes kills to clinch the match for the Trojans. Anderson finished with 50 assists on the night, her fifth match with at least 50 this season – moving into ninth place on the school's single-season assists record.
Â
Senior Logan Page had a big night in her final match on the Trojan Arena court, tallying 13 kills with a .333 attacking percentage in the match.
Â
Defensively, four Troy players went into double-digits in the digs category – 17 from Lacey Jeffcoat, 13 from SaraGrace Wilson, 11 from Hayes and 10 from Natalie Hummel. Meanwhile, freshman Caitlyn Cooper was responsible for three of the Trojans' four blocks in the match.
Â
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Josh Lauer
"Really good team effort tonight. I challenged the team before that fifth set that good teams have to be gritty; and we were really gritty down the stretch. Our defensive effort in the second half was tremendous and Cheyenne's performance was unbelievable all night. It's great that we could build a little momentum here and we'll take that as we head into the tournament next week."
