Men’s Golf Heads to Baton Rouge for David Toms Intercollegiate

TROY, Ala. – Following a promising start to its season two weeks ago, the Troy men's golf team is back on the links this weekend at the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
"We're excited to get back on the course and head down to Baton Rouge," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We made a small change in the lineup this weekend and I think this is a good group. We learned a lot from playing in the final grouping in our first event and we're looking to be in that same position this weekend."
The Trojans finished fifth at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate to open the season and were in the lead grouping in the final round. Three different Trojans fired rounds under par with all three breaking into the 60s.
Junior Jake Tiffin paced Troy with a 10thplace finish in the event shooting 1-under including a 69 in the final round. Sophomore Connor Futrell also turned in a solid season-opening performance as he tied for 13thplace at even par thanks to a 4-under 67 in the opening round.
"We tied for the lead in par 3 scoring in the opening tournament and that is a positive step for us because we were not great in those situations last year," Barnes said. "In my opinion, to play good team golf you need to play the par 3 and the par 5 holes well. If we can ball strike it well enough to play the par 3s like that, we are headed in the right direction."
Barnes made a slight change to his lineup with the addition of sophomore Ike Alexander to join senior Dean Martin and freshman Will McFadden. Martin opened strong at the Sam Hall with a 1-over after 36 holes and McFadden carded a second-round 68.
