BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy indoor track and field wrapped up its fourth meet of the 2018 season Sunday in the KMS Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Â
The Trojans continued success on the individual level as many athletes set personal bests and etched their name in the school record books.
Â
Niata Alexander reached the finals in a tough trio of events – 60-meter dash, 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay. The senior finished third in the 400 with a 55.66-second time and led the relay team to a runner-up spot in the 4x400.
Â
Hurdlers Camille Franks and Alexis Garrett shined in the meet, as well. Franks came away with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles after running the fifth-fastest time in school history at 8.71 seconds. Garrett finished fourth in the event with a personal season-best time of 8.86 seconds.
Â
Indiya Summerville continued her strong and consistent performances in the shot put, finishing third after tossing out to 14.11 meters.
Â
Troy will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
Quotable – Director Marc Davis
"We had another good week of solid performances across the board. We are starting to get more and more consistent from week to week. I am pleased with what seems to be a 'habit of success' among the team. The athletes are not settling for less than their best on the day of competition and we need those efforts. We are a team, but track is about individual success leading to team success. Individuals cannot be selfish and need to lay it all out for their teammates and we are really starting to see that happen."
Â
Notable
• Indiya Summerville continues to rewrite Troy's indoor record books, breaking her own record in the shot put in the first three meets of the year. Michael Alvernaz broke his own school record in the weight throw in each of the first two meets of the season.
Â
• All but one of Troy's seven indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex – including the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February. The lone trip away from Birmingham will come this weekend as the Trojans head to the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem.
Â
• Hakim Montgomery has won four consecutive 60-meter dash finals that he has competed in, dating back to 2016. He also had the fastest time in the qualifying rounds of all three competitions last season.
Â
• The December 1 meet marked the earliest start in Troy's track and field history.
Â
• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
