WINSTON-SALEM – Troy indoor track and field had its strongest showing of the 2018 season this weekend at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
Hakim Montgomery shined the brightest with his victory in the 60-meter dash over a loaded field that included a member of the U.S. National Team at the World Championships this past summer. The Junior posted a 6.64-second time in the finals to clinch the victory.
Â
A couple of strong freshman performances on the track helped spur the Trojans to success. Jared Hayes won the men's 200-meter dash with a meet record time of 21.77 seconds. Meanwhile, Amir Harris broke the school record in the 400-meter dash and finished second with a time of 48.69 seconds.
Â
On the field side, a duo of veterans – Michael Alvernaz and Titus Sizemore – provided a spark for Troy. Alvernaz placed second in the weight throw and broke his own school record for the third time this season after tossing out to 19.65 meters. Sizemore set a new personal best in the high jump with a 2.10-meter leap, good enough for fifth place in the event.
Â
For the women, the 400-meter dash proved to be the strongest event of the day for the Trojans. Niata Alexander, Madison Kennedy and Precious Ogba each finished in the top 10 and currently rank in the top 8 in the conference with their performances this season.
Â
The women's 4x400-meter relay team set a new school record in the relay (3:47.46) and won the event by more than three seconds. The four-member team was made up of Alexander, Tiarra Bailey, Kennedy and Ogba.
Â
Quotable – Director Marc Davis
"The team had its best performance as a whole since I took over the program. We are growing and the kids are starting to believe in how good they can be. Eight-hour bus rides are much more enjoyable when the majority of the team performed at their best. We have one more meet before conference for the women. They will all have a much lighter load event wise, but the goal is the same. Execute and Advance."
Â
Notable
• Hakim Montgomery has won five consecutive 60-meter dash finals that he has competed in, dating back to 2016. He also had the fastest time in the qualifying rounds of all three competitions last season and in the Camel City Invite this season.
Â
• Indiya Summerville continued to rewrite Troy's indoor record books, breaking her own record in the shot put in the first three meets of the year. Michael Alvernaz broke his own school record in the weight throw in each of the first two meets of the season and again in the Camel City Invite.
Â
• All but one of Troy's seven indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex – including the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February.
Â
• The December 1 meet marked the earliest start in Troy's track and field history.
Â
• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
