Final Results
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy indoor track and field wrapped up its first meet of the new year in the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday evening at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Â
The Trojans experienced widespread success among some of the top competition in the nation including Alabama, Miami, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and many others.
Â
Troy saw six of its indoor school records come crashing down and several individuals set new personal bests at the meet.
Â
Men's Athlete of the Meet – Hakim Montgomery
Veteran sprinter Hakim Montgomery started another season with yet another victory in the 60-meter dash. The junior ran a 6.77-second qualifying time, before sprinting out to a 6.68-second finish in the finals, earning the win.
Â
In the second consecutive meet, Michael Alvernaz broke his own school record in the weight throw, this time with a 19.37-meter toss. Three freshmen – Amir Harris, Jared Hayes and Jordan McCleskey – set the top three 500-meter times in school history with runs of 1:05.74, 1:05.86 and 1:05.98, respectively.
Â
Women's Athlete of the Meet – Indiya Summerville
Indiya Summerville broke the indoor shot put school record she set in the previous meet with a throw of 14.62 meters. This marks the third time that Summerville has broken the school record in the past two seasons.
Â
The women's 4x400-meter team – Niata Alexander, Tiarra Bailey, Madison Kennedy and Precious Ogba – set a new school record, as well, with a time of 3:48.79 to earn a sixth-place finish in the event.
Â
NOTABLE
• Hakim Montgomery won all three of the 60-meter events he ran in last indoor season and started off 2018 no differently with his victory in the dash Friday.
Â
• For the second meet in a row, Indiya Summerville and Michael Alvernaz both broke their own school records in their respective events, shot put and weight throw.
Â
• All but one of Troy's seven indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex – including the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February. The lone trip away from Birmingham will be to the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
• The December 1 meet marked the earliest start in Troy's track and field history.
Â
• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
