Masters Paces Troy in Opening Round of Season

ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Calum Masters fired an even-par 72 to lead Troy in the opening round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm on Friday. Masters raced out to a blistering pace with four straight birdies to open his round and is tied for 14th place overall.
Troy sits in 14th place after shooting a 308 in its opening round of the season. With a lineup that features Masters, plus three freshmen and a transfer, the Trojans are competing against a field that includes 10 teams that were ranked in the top 50 at the end of last season.
Masters, a junior from Headland, Ala., finished his opening round of the season with five birdies after carding a four on the par-5 ninth to close out his round. Florida's Alejandro Tosti shot a 6-under 66 to pace the field and Masters finds himself just three shots out of the top four.
Ike Alexander and Dean Martin fired matching 6-over 78s to sit tied for 66th place overall. Alexander made the turn at 5-over with one birdie before a strong finish. Sitting 7-over after 15 holes, the freshman carded a pair of birdies around a bogey to close out his day.
Martin started his Troy career in fine style with a birdie on the par-4 10th and added another on No. 16 to make the turn at 4-over. He played the back nine relatively clean with seven pars and two bogeys.
Connor Futrell carded an 8-over 80 with one birdie in his round to finish the day tied for 74th place, while Mac Murphy rounded out the day for Trojans in 79th place following an 82.
No. 9 Florida holds a one-shot lead over No. 69 Tennessee, while No. 18 Auburn is eight shots back in fourth and No. 4 LSU and No. 32 South Carolina are tied for fifth.
Troy will play Saturday's second round alongside Virginia and Chattanooga with the first grouping hitting the course at 7:22 a.m. (CT).
