Men’s Golf Opens Play at Shoal Creek Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Calum Masters fired a 2-over 146 to lead the Troy men's golf team in Monday's opening two rounds of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at the Shoal Creek Country Club.
With 36 holes to play on Monday, teams faced a shotgun start and the Trojans were placed in the middle of the back nine to open both rounds. Masters was 1-under after his first seven holes thanks to a pair of birdies; however, a double pushed him in the black which is where he settled.
Masters, who is tied for 23rd place, opened his second round with five straight pars before a flurry of activity. He bogeyed the par-4 18th and followed with a par on No. 1. He then went birdie-bogey on his next four holes before seven pars settled his card at 1-over.
Dean Martin is tied for 31st place at 3-over after rounds of 73 and 74 on Monday. He opened the day with three birdies around four birdies with his card never going above 2-over or under par. He followed with a pair of birdies in the second round, both coming after he was 4-over with three straight bogeys after making the turn.
Troy's best round of the day belonged to freshman Connor Futrell as he fired a 1-under 71 to open play. Futrell came out blazing with three straight birdies and four over his first six holes to shoot to 4-under par. He followed with four bogeys and one more birdie for Troy's first round under par this year. Futrell sits tied for 37th place at 4-over after carding a pair of birdies in a round of 77 in the afternoon flight.
The Trojans' other two freshmen – Ike Alexander and Mac Murphy – are tied for 59th and 68th place, respectively. Alexander is 8-over through 36 holes with a pair of matching 76s on Monday, while Murphy is 13-over after an 81 and 76 to open play.
The field is strong with 10 teams that finished ranked in the top 100 last season, including No. 11 Wake Forest which holds a four-shot lead over Notre Dame. Host UAB sits in third place five shots back, while Liberty and Ole Miss round out the top five.
Troy opens Tuesday's final round at 8:33 a.m. on the back side of the course along with South Alabama and Chattanooga. Troy leads South Alabama by eight shots and are six back of Chattanooga.
