Stone, Winter Strike Down Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Qarli Stone and Julia Winter each scored for the first time in 2017, both on pinpoint crosses from Haley Roberson, as the Troy soccer team downed Alabama State, 2-0, at the ASU Soccer Complex on Tuesday.
The game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes before the Trojans came out swinging in the second half. Karley Baker nearly broke the ice just seconds after the second half kick. The freshman found herself with the ball eight yards from goal on the left side of the box. She beat the keeper low, but an ASU defender cleared the shot off the line at the last moment.
Three minutes later, Roberson settled the ball on the right wing and lofted a cross into the six-yard box where Stone came charging in with a headed finish. In the 59th minute, Roberson picked out an open area in front of goal and Winter found the net with a diving header.
QUOTABLE
"There was a little bit of a confidence issue and they were trying not to make mistakes in the first half," Troy head coach Ged O'Connor said. "In the second half, I think our team really bought in to everything we've been trying to accomplish and played a lot better."
