Trojans Aim to Right Ship at Alabama State on Tuesday

TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team will travel the short 47 miles on Tuesday to meet up with Alabama State at the ASU Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. kick.

Both teams are looking to chalk up victories for the first time this season. Troy (0-2) fell to Mercer, 1-0, on Friday and No. 7 Florida, 5-0, on Sunday. Alabama State (0-2) dropped an 8-0 decision to Ole Miss in the season opener before suffering a 3-1 setback at the hands of Jacksonville State on Sunday.

Troy fell behind in just the sixth minute but came roaring back as the Trojans routed Alabama State, 4-1.

After the Hornets scored in the opening minutes, Troy responded with a goal off the head of Maddie Brune in the 17th minute on a free kick by Alex Huynh; it was Brune's first career goal. Two minutes later, Emily Stearns scored for the first time as a Trojan on shot from the top of the box.

In the 60th minute, Kate Lorez lobbed a pass to Lynsey Kelly who chested the ball down to Brooke McKee, who then dribbled through a pair of defenders and scored from the penalty spot. Alison Watkins fired a shot from distance in the 80th minute that struck the crossbar and fell to Amber Harless, who planted the goal; the first of her career.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Claire Peterson's goal proved to be the game-winner as the Alabama State women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 3-1, to Jacksonville State on Sunday at the JSU Soccer Complex.

Alabama State (0-2) opened the scoring early as Imma Martinez assisted Ariela Lewis' goal to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 advantage in just the third minute.

With the score tied at 1 in the 79th minute, Peterson stepped up to the penalty spot and the shot was saved by Gianna Guyot. The rebound went right back to Peterson, who knocked it in for the go-ahead goal. Just two minutes later, Peterson assisted on Monroe's goal to put the game out of reach.

• In the 11 meetings between the schools, Troy has outscored Alabama State 73-7.
