CONWAY, South Carolina – Coastal Carolina's Seth Lancaster drove in two runs on a full-count single to right field with two outs in the eighth to lift the Chanticleers past Troy, 5-4, on Saturday at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Trojans held a 4-3 lead when Marc Skinner was called upon to make his program record setting 103rd career appearance. He recorded the final out of the seventh stranding the tying run on second, but didn't have the same luck in the eighth. Following a strikeout to open the frame, Skinner (3-4) sandwiched two walks around a hit batsman to load the bases. A fly out later, Lancaster served Skinner's 3-2 pitch into right scoring two runs and giving the home team the lead for good.
Coastal (26-16-1, 12-7-1 SBC) got on the board first in the third inning after a walk, single and pair of sacrifice bunts pushed the game's opening run across against Troy starter Daren Osby. The Trojans tied the contest in the fifth on an RBI single by Drew Frederic.
Obsy went five innings allowing three runs on four hits while fanning four and walking three.
The Chanticleers gave Troy (24-18, 10-10) several scoring opportunities with some shaky defense. Trailing 3-1 with one out in the sixth, Mason Rogers grounded a ball to second, the attempt to start a double play was poor allowing the Trojans to score. In the seventh, Steven Whitaker reached on a fielding error and later scored along with Matt Sanders on a Trevor Davis base hit to give Troy the 4-3 advantage.
Andrew Beckwith got the start for Coastal and allowed four runs over 6.1 innings while striking out four. Bobby Holmes (4-3) tossed 2.2 innings in relief and came away with the victory.
Troy and Coastal Carolina will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at noon (CT).
