Women’s Tennis Has Another Big Day at Gridiron Classic

MACON, Georgia – The women's tennis team completed day two of the Gridiron Classic hosted by Mercer on Saturday. Troy is guaranteed to have a champion in the Stampeders' draw on Sunday.
In singles play, Efriliya Herlina and Nancy Karaky both advanced to the semifinals in their draw where they faced off against each other. Helina pulled away with a narrow 7-6 (6), 7-5 win where she will will move on to face another teammate Jiayuan Xue. Xue earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory and will face Herlina tomorrow in the finals.
Freshman Maria Casas also earned a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory in the semifinals. With a semifinal win from Troy's other freshman Matea Mihaljevic, the Trojans could send another pair to the finals.
Senior Sanae Ohta battled in her match, but fell just short dropping to a Mercer opponent 7-6 (6), 6-2.
On the doubles courts, Casas Blas and Mihaljevic fell in their quarterfinal match, but Xue and Herlina as well as Ohta and Karaky both advanced to the semifinals. Xue and Herlina capped the day with a dominating 6-0 win to advance to the finals on Sunday.
