Troy Track and Field Opens Indoor Season Saturday

TROY, Alabama – The 2017 Troy track and field season will kick off on Saturday at the UAB Vulcan Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Four of the Trojans' five indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Coming off last year's 30-point improvement at the Sun Belt Championships, the Trojans are looking to carry that momentum into this season.
The meet will begin with the men's and women's 500-meter dash at 8 a.m., and concludes with the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay at 4:00 p.m.
QUOTABLE
"We are all excited the track season is finally getting underway," Marc Davis said. "It has been a long fall of strictly training, so getting a competitive release for most of our team is long overdue. We have a very young team. Our veteran athletes have proven they could get the job done over the past two seasons. Now we have recruited some much needed help. If these kids can stay healthy over the rest of this semester, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. Obviously, this first meet is about shaking off the rust, but we as a coaching staff are excited about where we are going."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
• Hakim Montgomery, a junior gold medalist at the Junior World Championships in Poland this summer, will be competing in the 60-meter sprint and the 200-meter dash.
• Michael Alvernaz, who came in first place in the weight throw event at the Blazer Invite last year, will compete in the weight throw again this year. His throw was 16.98 meters, which was his best indoor toss of the season.
• Jaevyn Wortham, who earned NCAA All-American Honorable Mention status in the outdoor season, is competing in the weight throw at 9 a.m., and shot put at 1 p.m.
