TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team will compete against a side dressed in colors other than cardinal, silver and black on Sunday as the Trojans and Alabama are set to play an exhibition match in Orange Beach, Ala., at 11 a.m.
Â
Last season, the Crimson Tide defeated Troy, 1-0, in Tuscaloosa on a 77th-minute goal. The Trojans went on to win its next four matches and six of its next seven. The team finished the season 14-4-2.
Â
Despite losing five seniors whose names are sprinkled throughout the program's record book, several key players return and are joined by numerous impactful freshmen. Among the returners is senior Annabell Simpson, who ranks seventh all-time with 12 career assists. Defender Haley Roberson and goalkeeper Mikki Lewis were both All-Sun Belt selections and again look to anchor a Troy defense that has posted a league-high 23 shutouts over the last two seasons.
Â
Several new faces will be introduced, as well. Colorado transfer Alex Huynh is expected to make an immediate impact at center back, while Emily Stearns resettled from Nova Southeastern and will be injected into the Trojans attacking plans.
Â
Troy opens the 2016 season on the road against Gardner-Webb (Aug. 19) and Samford (Aug. 21). The team's home opener is set for Aug. 26 against Belmont in the Trojan Classic.
