BYDGOSZCZ, Poland – Troy track and field athlete Hakim Montgomery and Team USA took gold in the 4x100-meter relays at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Saturday.
Â
"Hakim put a lot of time and effort into his part of a gold medal winning performance at the World Championships," Marc Davis said. "He's worked hard all year and never complained. He just dreamed of getting better, and it showed based on the fact that he ran two events at the IAAF World U20 Championships. Not too many athletes in the country can say they've achieved that. There is so much fight in this kid. I know we haven't come close to seeing the best from him yet."
Â
Montgomery and the other members of the 4x100-meter relays finished third in their heat with a 39.70 time, but qualified for the finals due to having the top time of teams that finished outside the top two of their respective heats. Team USA finished with a 38.93 time in the finals, which is almost a whole second faster than their heat time. They ousted Japan, who finished with a 39.01 time, for a first place finish.
Â
"Hard work will always pay off no matter who your opponent is," Montgomery said.
Â
Montgomery also qualified for the semifinals of the 100-meter sprints, but finished sixth in his heat with a 10.53 time.
