Troy Baseball Falls to UT Arlington in Game Two of Series
4/23/2016 6:38:00 PM | Baseball
Â
UT Arlington (21-19, 7-10 Sun Belt) scored 18 runs on 24 hits and took advantage of five Trojan errors. The Mavericks scored seven runs on six hits in the fourth inning and took a 12-1 lead.
Â
"Today was just not our day," head coach Mark Smartt said. "We just have to put it behind us, come out tomorrow and look to win the series."
Â
Troy (23-17, 9-8 Sun Belt) took away a few good things in the game. TJ Binder continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 day, two doubles and one RBI. Austin Hulsey, who took over at first base late in the game, hit a two-run double in the ninth inning.
Â
The Trojans scored one run in the second, fourth and sixth innings, before Hulsey knocked in two in the ninth. Binder hit one of his doubles in the second inning and plated one. Trevor Davis scored the run in the fourth inning on a double play and Joey Denison drove in the other in the sixth inning as Lockridge scored on a fielder's choice.
Â
Another bright spot was the entrance of Jesse Nelson, who made his first appearance on the mound since May 23, 2014 against Arkansas State. The redshirt sophomore pitched two innings, gave up three hits and struck out one. His only blemish was a two-run home run from the second batter he faced.
Â
Houston Mabray (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He yielded five runs on seven hits and struck out two. Four other pitchers made an appearance in the game, all gave up at least one run.
Â
The Mavericks scored in every inning but two and had eight players with multi-hit games. Joey Kuhnel (4-2) picked up the win pitching six innings with four strikeouts. He only walked one and gave up three runs – two earned – on six hits.
Â
Troy looks to bounce back on Sunday, as the two teams will play the rubber match at Riddle-Pace Field at noon.
