Troy Baseball Drops 10-Inning Game Against UT Arlington
4/24/2016 4:20:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama - Despite outhitting UT Arlington 10-6, the Troy baseball team dropped a 10-inning rubber game, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
"Our lack of execution cost us the game," Mark Smartt said. "It's very disappointing to say the least to lose the series at home with a lead in the eighth inning. I've got to do a better job of getting our kids ready to compete the right way."
Â
Matt Sanders had three of the Trojans (23-18, 9-9 Sun Belt) hits, while Joey Denison and TJ Binder had two. Sanders had a big day at the dish going 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season and drove in both of Troy's runs.
Â
UT Arlington (22-19, 8-10 Sun Belt) took the lead in the 10th inning as two runs scored on back-to-back singles. One run was from Josh Minjarez, who drove in the go-ahead run and the latter from Matt McLean, who put the Mavericks on top 4-2.
Â
Troy fell behind early 1-0, but tied the game in the fourth inning when Sanders hit his first home run of the season and the fourth of his career. The home run came with one out and nobody on base.
Â
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when Sanders singled through the left side. Brandon Lockridge, who reached on a single and advanced to second on a groundout, scored the go-ahead run.
Â
The Mavericks answered back with a run in the top of the eight as Minjarez drove in a run on a groundout to second base and tied the game at two.
Â
Relief pitcher Jacob Moreland (3-0) picked up the win. He pitched six innings, allowed seven hits but only surrendered one run. He walked two and struck out one.
Â
Lucas Brown had another quality start as he pitched seven innings, only gave up two runs on three hits and struck out five. Brown was also great defensively; he had two putouts and two assists.
Â
Marc Skinner (1-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 2.1 innings of relief work, only gave up one run and didn't allow a hit or a walk. His only baserunner was Darien McLemore, who reached on an error.
Â
Troy had multiple chances to put the game away, but the Trojans left 12 runners on base. The sixth, seventh and eighth innings combined saw the Trojans leave seven runners on.
Â
Troy will return to the diamond in San Marcos, Texas, when they take on Texas State for a three game series. The first game will be on Friday and will start at 6 p.m.
