Troy Softball Travels to UAB For Mid-Week Game

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team travels to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the UAB Blazers at Mary Bowers Field on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Troy (15-5) is coming off a 3-1 weekend in the Purple and Gold Challenge at Lipscomb. The Trojans claimed the tournament championship as they picked up wins over Youngstown State, Indiana State and Furman– two of those coming in extra innings.

Erica Davis had a monster weekend for the Trojans with nine hits and nine RBIs. She hit three home runs on the weekend, two of them coming against Indiana State and led the Trojans with a .600 batting average.

Kate Benton leads the Trojans in batting average with a .484 mark. Additionally, she has 30 hits and has scored 22 runs. She is second in the Sun Belt in stolen bases with 18 on 21 attempts. Hannah Day still leads in the home run category with seven on the season and in RBIs with 25.

Ashley Rainey is coming off a win in the circle and a walk-off home run against Furman. She leads the Troy pitching staff with an 8-5 record and 24 strikeouts in 57.2 innings of work. Rainey has a 3.16 ERA and opponents are batting .268 against her.

UAB (7-15) is coming off a 2-3 tournament weekend in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Tennessee Invitational. JoJo Fallen leads the Blazers offensively with a .379 batting average.

The Blazers were victorious, 5-1, when the two teams squared off last March. UAB struck first in the top of the second and then pushed four more runs across the plate in the top of the seventh to clinch the win. The Trojans lone run came in the bottom of the sixth on a Becca Hartley home run.

Following the game at UAB, Troy returns home to host its first Sun Belt Conference game of the 2016 season against Georgia State at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans will play a doubleheader against the Panthers on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and will finish the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
