Winters’ Slam Lifts Troy Past UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Amanda Winters launched a grand slam over the scoreboard in the top of the first inning and that would be all the runs Troy would need in a 4-2 victory over UAB at Mary Bowers Field on Tuesday night.

Besides Winters' grand slam, the Trojans got big offensive nights from Ashley Rainey and Becca Hartley, who had two hits each.

Troy (16-5) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first as Kate Benton reached on an infield single, Erica Davis walked and Hannah Day was hit by a pitch. Winters wasted no time as she took the first pitch she saw from Cara Goodwin over the wall in right field for her fifth homer of the season.

The other Trojan hits came in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Rainey hit a shot down the left field line for a double and Hartley had singles in the fourth and seventh innings.

UAB's (7-16) two runs of the game were scored in the first and third innings. JoJo Fallen hit a sacrifice fly to score Caitlin Attfield in the bottom of the first and Attfield scored in the third on a wild pitch.

Goodwin (5-3) suffered the loss for the Blazers as she allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings of work.

Troy returns home this weekend to open Sun Belt Conference play against Georgia State at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans will play a doubleheader against the Panthers on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and will finish the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
