Track & Field Wins 10 Events at Outdoor Season Opener

MOBILE, Alabama – Troy's men's track and field team won seven events and the women's squad won three at this weekend's Jaguar Opener hosted by South Alabama.
"There were a number of good performances this weekend at our first outdoor meet," director Mark Davis said. "We competed hard and fought for scoring positions. For many of the men, it was their first competition this year, and we only brought a select amount of women to the meet to provide some of our recent Sun Belt competitors with additional recovery. Overall, I'm happy with how the weekend went. When the team continues to accumulate personal bests, you can't ask for anything more. We just have to keep it up."
On the track, the Trojans shined in several events, including the 100-meter dash, where Troy finished ahead of the competition on the men's and women's sides. Freshman Hakim Montgomery bolted to first in 10.74 seconds as freshman Gabrielle Henderson won the 100-meter dash in 12.46 seconds. Charley also won the long and triple jump events with distances of 7 and 14.87 meters, respectively. Both Montgomery and Charley contributed to the meet-winning 4x100-meter relay, which also included junior Isaac Jennings and their new teammate, Chandler Worthy, who finished second in the 100-meter dash.
Freshman Tiarra Bailey also won her event, the 600-meter dash, in a time of 1:38.43. Her classmate, Kyle Norris, took second in the men's 3,000-meter run in 8:53.43. Fellow freshmen Tyson Robinson, John Webb and Courtland White took spots first through third in the 1,500-meter run.
In her first competition as a Trojan, sophomore Eastern Michigan-transfer Helga Volgyi took second in the hammer throw by recording a 54.68-meter (179.39') toss. Junior Alison Taylor placed fifth with a 49.65-meter (162.65') throw. Senior Dartmouth-transfer TJ Servino also competed for Troy for the first time this weekend and took third in the hammer throw with a 60.43-meter (198.26') effort to establish a new personal best.
Troy finished back-to-back in the women's discus as sophomore Jaevyn Wortham won the event with a new personal-best distance of 51.96 meters (170.47') and junior Cori Cox followed up with a 50.48-meter (165.61') mark. In the same event on the men's side, junior Zach Douglas took third by throwing 54.08 meters (177.42'). In the javelin, junior heptathlete Riley Schwietz picked up a second-place finish with a 40.09-meter throw.
The Trojans will return to competition in the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from March 17-19, as well as South Alabama's Jaguar Classic on March 19.
