Track & Field to Resume Outdoor Season at Alabama Relays
3/17/2016 3:28:00 PM | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Troy track and field will take a select group of student-athletes to compete in the John Mitchell Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The three-day meet will begin on Thursday, with the men's hammer throw at 1 p.m.
Friday's track and field events are scheduled to start concurrently at 5 p.m. Saturday's field events are slated for noon with the women's discus, while the first running event will kick off at 2 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relays. Teams representing 35 schools, ranging from junior colleges to large universities, will compete at this year's Alabama Relays.
"This meet is always a fun opportunity to put together some nontraditional relays that you don't often get the chance to compete in at other meets," director Mark Davis said. "Plus, the competition is always very good, which encourages our student-athletes to step up and rise to the level of talent they're facing."
Senior TJ Servino and freshman Michael Alvernaz will start the action for the Trojans in the men's hammer throw. Servino established a new personal best in the event at last weekend's Jaguar Opener, where he recorded a 60.43-meter (198.26') toss. At the same meet, sophomore Helga Volgyi also eclipsed her best mark with a 54.68-meter (179.39') effort, which she will look to improve on this Thursday. Her classmate, Jaevyn Wortham, will enter the ring for the shot put and discus.
Junior All-American Corina Cox, who finished seventh in the country last year in the discus as a sophomore, will return to that event this weekend as well as the shot put. In addition, freshman Indiya Summerville will look to roll with the momentum she built during a successful indoor campaign in the shot put.
Freshman Gemma Finch, who finished second in the heptathlon at the Sun Belt Indoor Conference Championship last month, will return to competition in the women's high jump, where she leads flight one with her personal-best height of 1.67 meters (5'5.75"). Junior heptathlete Riley Schwietz will compete in the javelin after setting a personal best of 40.09 meters (131.52') last weekend for second place. In the men's pole vault, sophomore C.J. Phillips will enter with the second-best height among the other competitors.
After a stellar indoor season, freshman Hakim Montgomery shone once again at the Jaguar Opener, winning the 100-meter dash in 10.74 seconds. He will return in that event at the Alabama Relays. Senior Chandler Worthy, a former Troy football standout who represented the Houston Texans in the NFL last year, will also suit up for the Trojans to race the 100-meter dash. Montgomery and Worthy will also contribute legs to the 4x100-meter relay, along with junior Cameron Rice and senior Benjamin Martin, who holds the school record in the 100-meter dash and will compete in the invitational section this weekend.
In the women's relays, Troy will take advantage of rare opportunities to assemble teams for the 4x200-meter and sprint medley. Senior Cameia Alexander, junior Dallas Worthy and sophomores Niata Alexander and Sydney Wright will represent the Trojans in the 4x200-meter relay. Troy will also form teams for the women's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. Wright will have a busy weekend – her personal-best mark of 11.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash qualified her for the invitational section, where she is ranked second.
Sun Belt Conference runner-up Niata Alexander will return to the 400-meter dash for the first time since she blazed to second place at this year's indoor conference meet. Worthy, who raced to seventh place in the Sun Belt Conference's 400-meter finals nearly three weeks ago, will compete with Niata Alexander in that event again this weekend. On the men's side, sophomore Cameron Rice is also slated to race 400 meters in a bid to crack 48 seconds.
Following his victory at last weekend's Jaguar Opener, freshman Tyson Robinson will return to the 1,500-meter run with his classmate, John Webb.
