Troy Baseball Blasts Seven Doubles, Drops Series Finale to Little Rock
3/26/2016 5:08:00 PM | Baseball
Pinch-hitter Brody Binder delivered a two-out double to left center field for Troy (13-12, 3-6 Sun Belt) that scored Trevor Davis and Chase Smartt and tied the game at nine in the seventh inning.
Little Rock (12-11, 5-4 Sun Belt) answered and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI single off the bat of Zach Baker.
Troy scored the first three runs of the game on five hits to take a 3-0 lead. Three of the five hits in the first inning were doubles. The last time the Trojans scored three runs and hit three doubles in the first inning was on May 15, 2014 against South Alabama.
Cameron Knight drove in the first two runs of the game for Little Rock in the bottom half of the first inning that cut the Troy deficit to one run.
The Trojans of Troy added four more runs in the second inning, which put them ahead 7-2. Shaw Pinnell scored from second and gave Troy a 4-2 advantage, when Joey Denison doubled to left field with two outs in the inning. Cameron Sanders doubled home two more runs and scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Little Rock scored a combined seven runs in the second and third innings to go up 9-7. The Trojans scored four in the second inning off a two-run double from Ryan Scott, followed by a two-run home run from Dalton Thomas. The three runs in the bottom of the third came on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single.
Troy had 11 hits in the game and seven of the 11 were doubles, the most doubles hit in a game since the Trojans had nine doubles against ULM on March 23, 2014. Denison led the way with two doubles, a single-game high, in a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Peyton Fuller, Davis, Sanders, TJ Binder and Brody Binder all had a double in the game. Fuller's double came in the first inning and extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. Davis scored three runs and was the only other Troy player to have a multi-hit day.
Corey Childress (1-2) came on in relief and pitched a season-high five innings and only allowed one run on five hits. Childress struck out seven and retired 10 in a row, but suffered the loss. Trey Johns came on in the eighth inning and only surrendered one hit.
The Trojans will kick off a nine-game homestead with a Tuesday night game against Alabama State at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
