3/28/2016 5:29:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team will begin the first of a nine-game homestand at Riddle-Pace Field against in-state rival, Alabama State, on "Trivia Tuesday" at 6 p.m.
Â
Troy (13-12) won its last Tuesday game, 8-0, when it hosted Alabama A&M on March 22. The Trojans were efficient at the plate scoring eight runs on 10 hits.
Â
Joey Denison has been hitting the ball well lately and has propelled himself to have a team-high six doubles on the year. Denison also had eight hits in four games last week with three doubles and five RBIs.
Â
Peyton Fuller has continued to hit the ball since he's seen been in the starting lineup the past 12 games and has had at least one hit in each game he's started. The 12-game hitting streak is the longest of his career and most for any Trojan this season.
Â
Freshman Cory Gill will make his fourth mid-week start of the season on the hill. He brings in a 2.41 ERA with 23 strikeouts and has only allowed five earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched all year.
Â
Alabama State (16-10) is fresh off a series sweep of conference foe, Alcorn State, and outscored the Braves 28-1. The Hornets are 9-0 in SWAC games, but are only 2-5 in mid-week contests. Carlos Occasion has been a run producer for Alabama State and has driven in 27 RBIs and has hit seven long balls, both tops on the team.
Â
The Hornets will pitch Burke Echelmeier, who has a 4.05 ERA and eight strikeouts on the year. He has given up nine runs – three earned – in 6.2 innings of work. Opponents are batting .310 when facing him.
Â
Troy leads the all-time series 18-4 over Alabama State. The Hornets swept the season series against the Trojans and won both games in Troy and Montgomery. The Trojans hold a 10-1 record when facing Alabama State at Riddle-Pace Field.
