Troy (13-10, 3-4 Sun Belt) took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Brandon Lockridge led off the game with a triple to right field and Peyton Fuller brought him home for the first run of the game. The RBI single by Fuller brought his current career-high hitting streak to 10 games.
Chase Smartt came up in the first inning with two outs and the bases loaded and hit a two-run single through the ride side and gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
Little Rock (10-11, 3-4 Sun Belt) cut the Troy lead to one in the bottom half of the first on back-to-back RBI singles. Little Rock went on to score a combined seven runs on seven hits in the second and third innings and took a 9-4 lead. Three runs came in the second and four runs were scored in the third.
Troy battled back and scored four runs in the fifth inning. Trevor Davis grounded out to second and scored Peyton Fuller, who reached on a walk. Joey Denison, who doubled to right center field in the inning, scored on a Matt Sanders sacrifice fly and made the score 9-6.
Smartt drove in his third run of the game, a career-high, with a double to left center. Friend singled to left field and scored Smartt that cut the lead to 9-8, but a strikeout brought the inning to an end.
Little Rock's 16th hit came in the seventh inning when Nik Gifford added a couple of insurance runs on a double to left field.
One run was as close as the Trojans got in trying to take the lead. Troy left the bases loaded twice in the game; once in the sixth inning, down one run and the other the eighth, down three runs.
Davis and Smartt led the way offensively for the Trojans with career-high games. Davis had a career-high three hits with a 3-for-4 night, one RBI and two runs scored. Smartt had a career-high three RBIs on a 2-for-5 performance with one double and one run scored.
Five other Trojans had hits and three of those five had an RBI. Friend, Fuller and TJ Binder were the three players to have one hit and one RBI on the night.
Lucas Brown (3-3) suffered the loss for Troy. He only pitched 2.1 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He gave up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits and one strikeout.
The two teams combined for 26 hits, which was just one hit shy of tying the most combined hits in a game by any Sun Belt school this season.
Troy will look to bounce back Friday at 6 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field as Grant Bennett toes the rubber for the Trojans in game two of the three-game set.
