LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – The Troy baseball team rallied late, but left the bases loaded in the ninth inning and fell to Little Rock on Friday, 4-3, at Gary Hogan Field.
Down 4-2 in the ninth inning, Troy (13-11, 3-5 Sun Belt) pushed across one run on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Lockridge that cut the deficit to one runs, 4-3. A strikeout and a walk later, the bases were loaded with two outs and a pop out to first base closed the game for the Trojans.
Troy scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field by Justin Friend. Troy took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Peyton Fuller drove in Shaw Pinnell, who reached on a bunt single, with an RBI single through the left side.
Little Rock (11-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) took advantage of two Trojan errors in the eighth inning and went up 4-2. Cameron Knight tied the game at two with an RBI single up the middle. Knight came around to score the go-ahead run on a throwing error by the Troy third baseman. The final run in the inning scored on an error by the Trojan second baseman.
Troy had four players who had hits on the night and three had RBIs. Fuller extended his hitting streak to 11 games and picked up his 13th RBI of the season.
Grant Bennett (3-1) pitched 7.2 innings, allowed three runs – one earned – on seven hits and suffered the tough loss. Marc Skinner picked up the final out of the eighth inning and only allowed one run on one hit.
Of the four runs that Little Rock scored, only one was earned and only one scored as a result of an RBI. However, Ryan Scott, the nations leading hitter went 0-for-3 on the night and only drew one walk.
Troy and Little Rock will play the final game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
