Troy Softball Has Record-Breaking Day at Appalachian State
3/18/2016 11:05:00 PM | Softball
BOONE, N.C. – Paced by senior Hannah Day's NCAA-record setting day, the Troy softball team assaulted the school record book on Friday by setting single-game records in runs scored, home runs and RBIs in the second game of a Sun Belt doubleheader at Appalachian State.
Troy defeated App State 23-6 in the nightcap in a game that featured seven home runs off the bats of the Trojans, which tied for the 11th most in a game in NCAA history. The Trojans finished the game with 51 total bases, which is the 10th most in a game in NCAA history, while Day tied an NCAA record with 16 total bases of her own.
Day finished the game 5-for-5 with three home runs, two doubles and nine RBIs – her RBI total establishes a new school record and her home run tally ties a school record. In the doubleheader, Day belted out eight hits, four home runs and 13 RBIs. Day now has 11 home runs and 42 RBIs with a remarkable .852 slugging percentage on the season (27 games).
The Trojans (20-7, 3-2 Sun Belt) completely outmatched the Mountaineers in the doubleheader as they finished with 34 runs, 33 hits, nine home runs, three doubles and three triples over the two games.
TROY 11, APPALACHIAN STATE 1 (Game One)
In a precursor of what was to come, Kate Benton, Erica Davis and Hannah Day all had multi-hit games to lead the Trojans to a victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. Davis and Day both had three hits to pace Troy, while Benton added a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Troy jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning – three of which scored before an out was recorded. Benton drew a four-pitch walk to leadoff the game and Davis singled up the middle to get things rolling for the Trojans. Day worked a 2-2 count before crushing a pitch over the wall in center field for the first of her four homers on the day. Amanda Winters followed with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Trojans plated three runs in the second on an RBI single from Day and a two-run error by the Mountaineers (6-22, 1-4). The lead swelled to 8-0 in the third on a sac fly from Becca Hartley after Heather Johnston reached on an App State error.
Pepper Butler put the Mountaineers on the board with a two-out double in the fourth, but the Trojans iced the run-rule victory with a three-spot in the fifth. Johnston led off the inning with her first homer of the season, while Davis singled home a run and scored on a wild pitch.
Reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Ashley Rainey (11-6) picked up the win in the circle for Troy. She tossed four innings, gave up only one run and did not allow a walk. Annaleise Kennedy (2-7) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers as she allowed seven runs on seven hits.
TROY 23, APPALACHIAN STATE 6
Paced by Day's five hits, five Trojans finished the nightcap of the doubleheader with multiple hits as Rainey was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Hartley, Carli Kayler and Winters added two each.
Troy's bats heated up in the first inning and stayed that way throughout the game. The Trojans combined for a total 23 runs, 21 hits, 21 RBIs and seven home runs.
Day got the scoring started in the first with a double to center field that scored Davis. Rainey came up behind her with a triple that pushed the second run across.
The Trojans would be forced to play catchup after the Mountaineers scored four in the first capped by a 3-run homer from Cara Parker.
Troy matched App State's four runs with four of their own in the top half of the second inning. Hartley led off the frame with her sixth homer of the season and Day followed later in the inning with a 2-run shot. Winters followed with a triple to center and Rainey brought her home with a single through the left side.
The Mountaineers fought back to tie the game at 6-all with 2-run homer from Natalie Orcutt, but the Trojans exploded for 11 runs on seven hits in the top of the third.
Day hit two home runs in the 11-run third inning – a 2-run shot and a grand slam. Davis contributed with an RBI bunt fielder's choice, Johnston picked up an RBI single and Jordan Gray drew a bases loaded walk.
After being held scoreless in the fourth, Troy put the icing on the cake with three more home runs in the top of the fifth including back-to-back shots from Winters and Rainey after Kayler hit a one-out bomb and Day just missed her fourth homer of the game with a double to center field.
Peyton Glover (4-0) picked up the win for the Trojans throwing 3.2 inning out of the bullpen; she allowed two runs on four hits and struck out a pair. Vanessa Ciocatto (4-10) took the loss for Appalachian State. She pitched four innings and allowed 17 runs – 15 earned – on 15 hits.
Troy will go for the three-game series sweep Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
