Troy Battles, Falls Late at Conference Leading Arkansas State
2/6/2016 6:11:00 PM | Basketball (W)
JONESBORO, Arkansas – In a game that had 20 lead changes, the Troy women's basketball team led late but Arkansas State went on a run to take a 94-80 decision at the Convocation Center on Saturday.
Troy (10-11, 5-7) was up, 71-70, with 6:06 to go in a well-played game for both teams. Arkansas State (18-3, 12-0), however, went on a 16-3 run to surge ahead, 89-74, with 1:23 to go. Over that run, the Red Wolves hit 6-of-7 shots, including back-to-back 3-pointers as the shot clock horn.
Ashley Beverly Kelley was one off of her season high with 32 points and nine rebounds. ArJae' Saunders added a career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting with six rebounds. Amanda Mendoza was also in double figures with 11 points.
Khadija Brown-Haywood scored 23 points with 12 rebounds to lead Arkansas State, that after having just two points and two boards at halftime. Jessica Flanery and Aundrea Gamble added 22 and 21 points, respectively, for the Red Wolves.
"Our goal was to reduce their points in paint, and we cut that in half," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "We did not shoot well or play well in the fourth quarter, which is a big concern and the thing we most need to fix."
Troy shot just 8-of-23 (35 percent) in the deciding fourth quarter while the Red Wolves hit 8-of-13 (62 percent). Arkansas State went to the free throw line 18 times, making 12 in the fourth quarter as part of a 22-of-29 effort on the night. Troy, after not missing on Thursday, was just 9-of-17 at the line.
The Trojans held Arkansas State to 35 percent shooting in the first half and also outrebounded the Red Wolves, 26-18, but trailed by one, 39-38. The Red Wolves went on to outrebound Troy, 28-11, in the second half, 46-37 for the game.
With Troy up by two, 50-48, in the third quarter, Brown-Haywood hit three consecutive 3-pointers to give Arkansas State a 57-50 lead. Troy, however, did not go away and was within one before Flanery hit a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, part of a 6-of-11 showing from deep for the senior.
In all, the Red Wolves made 12 3-pointers on the night, a season high. Their 12-of-30 effort also included two during their fourth-quarter run by Flanery and Gamble as the Red Wolves bled away the shot clock on consecutive possessions.
Arkansas State, which had started five seniors in all 20 games this season, was without forward Amanda Lawson on Saturday and Troy took advantage. Troy outscored the Red Wolves in the paint, 38-24, and in second-chance points, 17-5.
The loss was Troy's sixth straight, but Rigby is encouraged as the Trojans return home next week.
"This was a tough road swing to try to bounce back with," Rigby said. "We have made improvements and we are coming back home strong for Georgia Southern."
Georgia Southern will come to Trojan Arena after a Saturday win at home over Texas State. The Trojans and Eagles are set to tipoff at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday at Trojan Arena.
