Track and Field Slated to Compete at Jaguar Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Trojan men's and women's track and field squads will face off against several conference rivals this weekend at the Jaguar Invitational, which will be hosted by South Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The action on the infield will begin at 12:15 p.m. with the women's high jump, and running events will commence with the women's mile at 12:30 p.m.
"Now that we have a few meets under our belts, it's time to bring more of a competitive edge to this invitational and see where we stack up against some familiar faces from Sun Belt," head coach Marc Davis said. "Based on the progress we've witnessed so far, I'm confident we'll leave with additional improvement and a better idea of where we need to go from here."
Last Sunday, the Trojans competed at the KMS Invitational at the CrossPlex and brought home victories in the men's and women's distance-medley. In addition, the throwers continued their dominance as junior Zach Douglas took second in the shot put and freshman Indiya Summerville set a huge personal best for the third meet in a row, moving her farthest mark of all time from 13.56 meters (44'6") to 14.33 meters (47'0.25") for fourth place. Both competitors will throw the shot again this Sunday.
In the field events, senior Myles Charley will compete in the triple and long jump after setting season's-best distances for third and fifth, respectively, last weekend at the KMS Invitational. His classmate, Benjamin Martin, will take to the track again to race the 60- and 200-meter dashes. Martin will be joined in both events by freshman Hakim Montgomery, who qualified for the 60-meter-dash finals in each of the meets he competed in this year. After racing to his best indoor time ever last weekend in the 200-meter dash, junior Cameron Rice will join Martin and Montgomery in that event as he looks to improve on his 21.98-second finish.
On the women's team, sophomore Sydney Wright is on the cusp of a breakthrough in the 60-meter dash after turning in a time of 7.66 seconds last Sunday, which is only three-hundredths of a second off her personal best. Wright, freshman Gabrielle Henderson and junior Sierra King will all compete in the 60-meter dash on Sunday. That evening, Wright will return to the track to race the 200-meter dash with classmate Niata Alexander, who ran her fastest time of the season last weekend in that race. Alexander will also contend for a season's best time in the 400-meter dash and will likely contribute a leg to the 4x400-meter relay.
After delivering a quick effort in the 600-meter run for third place last weekend, freshman Tyson Robinson will return Sunday to race his marquee event, the 800-meter run, with classmates John Webb and Courtland White. In addition, junior Mikayla Hodges will open her indoor season this weekend in the 5,000-meter dash after a successful 2015 cross country campaign.
Next weekend, the Trojan women will travel to the Birmingham CrossPlex again for the Samford Invitational, a two day event on Friday and Saturday.
