Troy Volleyball Falls To Tennessee in Hard-Fought Match

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team fell to Tennessee, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Trojan Arena, despite a trio of Trojans tallying seven kills in the match.
The first set was tied at 14 when Troy (6-14) fell victim to a quick 4-1 run by Tennessee (11-6). The Trojans cut the deficit to two points three times and one point twice, but the Volunteers ran away with it late for a 25-21 victory.
Troy went on a run of its own in the second set with the set tied at 14, but Tennessee stormed back and took a 22-20 lead that eventually led to a 25-23 win. Tennessee began the third set with a 9-4 lead, but the Trojans made a game of it and tied the set at 16. The Volunteers finished the set on a 9-3 run that clinched the match with a 25-19 third set victory.
QUOTABLE
"We put in a gameplan for what we hoped we could do and it was really good to see the team really follow the gameplan, pretty much, to a T," Sonny Kirkpatirck said. "We competed really well and I'm really proud of the way we had ourselves composed. A play here or there and we maybe steal a game or two. If we play as hard as we did tonight on a consistent basis then we'll be alright the rest of the year."
TURNING POINT
With the second set tied at 14, the Trojans went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 advantage, but Tennessee answered with seven straight points and took a 22-20 lead. The Volunteers capped off the set scoring three of the last four points for a 25-23 victory.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Trojans held the Volunteers to a .217 hitting percentage, which is the third lowest a team has held them all season. The Volunteers were held to a .182 hitting percentage in the first set, a .265 percentage in the second set and a .214 hitting percentage in the third set. Tennessee is averaging a .282 hitting percentage this season.
NOTEWORTHY
• Symone Shaw, Logan Page and Leah Causey each had seven kills on the night. The trio led the team in that category and Page had a .312 hitting percentage.
• Jordyn Saulsberry capped her performance with five kills and a .154 percentage.
• The attendance for Wednesday's match was 774, which is the highest at Trojan Arena for the 2016 season.
