BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – In their first scored meet of the year, Troy's women's track and field squad took third out of 12 teams among Division I schools of the Emory Invitational on Sunday at the CrossPlex in Birmingham.
"Although we've still got some work to do, it was nice to leave the meet today with a top-three team finish," head coach Marc Davis said. "We're definitely moving in the right direction. The goals we set earlier in the year are starting to come into focus, and this meet was a good indicator of our progress."
Highlighted by several outstanding performances in the weight throw and shot put, Troy collected almost half of its points from the throwing events. Freshman Indiya Summerville continued her successful indoor campaign with a lifetime-best throw of 13.56 meters (44'6") for her first collegiate victory in the shot put. Sophomore Jaevyn Wortham followed up in that event for third place with a personal-best throw that landed 12.89 meters (42'03.5") from the board. In the weight throw, Wortham returned to take second overall with another personal best of 17.16-meters (56'3.75"). Third place went to junior Allison Taylor's 15.73-meter (51'7.25") toss.
Sophomore Carissa Madson also had a career day with a personal-best clearance in the pole vault of 3.40 meters (11'1.75") to earn first place.
Troy's 4x400-meter relay, comprised of sophomore Niata Alexander, junior Dallas Worthy and freshmen Ashley McDonald and Tiarra Bailey, finished less than a second out of first place in 3:55.22 minutes. In the open events, Alexander took fifth with a 25.29-second 200-meter dash and sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.57 seconds. Her classmate, Sydney Wright, recorded a 25.34-second 200-meter dash and crossed the line right after Alexander for seventh place. In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Lacey Marcus raced to sixth place.
On Sunday, the Trojan men's and women's squads will travel to the CrossPlex again for the Privateer Invitational hosted by the University of New Orleans.
