MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida – Paced by a trio of golfers in the top seven, the Troy men's golf team cruised to its first tournament title since 2006 with a 12-shot victory in the Sun Belt Conference Preview at the Raven Golf Course.
The Trojans shot a 1-under 283 in Sunday's final round after setting a school record with a 270 in the second round on Saturday. Troy went low in the final two rounds after sitting in fifth place following the opening round. The Raven will host the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the second straight year in April.
"I'm really pleased with the way our guys responded to the challenge today," Troy head coach Matt Terry said. "We knew after yesterday that the other teams would be gunning for us, but we came out and went low for the second straight round. There are a lot of quality teams in this conference, and for us to come out of here with a win, it is a big accomplishment for this group."
Troy's junior trio of Luke Moser, Jared Bettcher and Clayton Vannoy had quite a weekend with a combined six rounds in the 60s. Moser finished in second place – just one shot off the pace – while Bettcher placed sixth and Vannoy tied for seventh.

Bettcher had an eventful day to move three spots up the leaderboard as he carded seven birdies, a pair of bogeys and one double-bogey in the final round. He picked up three birdies on the front nine, but made the turn at even par. After a birdie on No. 11 and a bogey on No. 13, Bettcher birdied three of his final five holes to finish the round at 3-under and the weekend at 4-under.
Bettcher and Moser led the field with 15 birdies each, while Vannoy and Cam Norman tied for second with 39 pars.
Vannoy fired his second 73 of the weekend in Sunday's final round thanks to his seventh birdie of the tournament. Vannoy also had an eagle on his card for the weekend as he finished with a 1-under 212.
Defending Sun Belt champion Georgia Southern finished in second place, 12 shots back of Troy, while South Alabama, Georgia State and UL Lafayette rounded out the top five. South Alabama's Daniel Jansen won individual medalist honors thanks to a 4-under 67 in the final round.
Calum Masters tied for 14th place overall after carding a 2-over 73 in the final round. The Troy freshman finished strong as he birdied three of his final four holes to recovery from 3-over start to the back nine.
Norman had one birdie in his final round and finished the tournament tied for 35th place with a 10-over 223, while Sean Stone, who shot a 3-under 69 in the second round, wrapped up the weekend tied for 52nd place.
The Trojans will be right back in action Monday as they head to Birmingham, Ala., and the Shoal Creek Country Club for the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by Graeme McDowell. The 12-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday; Troy will be paired with Mississippi State and Houston for the first two rounds.
