Troy Drops Sun Belt Opener in Five Sets
9/18/2015 8:49:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team won the first two sets, but Appalachian State completed the comeback in a 3-2 (20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-9) win at Trojan Arena on Friday night in each team's Sun Belt opener.
Â
Troy (5-8, 0-1) seemed poised to snapped a five-match losing streak after rolling through the first two sets, but after the break the Trojans hit just .039 in the third set and Appalachian State (8-4, 1-0) began to build momentum.
Â
The Mountaineers hit .219 and .286 in the fourth and fifth sets and Troy hit .000 in each as Appalachian State left Trojan Arena with the win.
Â
"We played really well in the first two sets," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick. "But give App State credit for coming back and playing well in three, four and five. They made plays that we had made in the first two games. It was a good match, but it really stinks to come out on the bottom of it."
Â
Leah Causey posted a season-high 15 kills to lead the Trojans with Blair Winston was just behind her with 14 kills. Causey hit a match-high .235 for the Trojans who ended the day with a .096 attack percentage.
Â
Troy, who entered leading the Sun Belt in blocks per set, posted 5.5 as a team in the first two sets, but just 1.0 after that. Sara Landis led the way with four blocks.
Â
Ali Dowdall recorded a match-high 22 digs and was one of three Trojans to posted double digits. Avalon Nero posted a career-high 12 digs while Reina Terry recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs.
Â
Jess Keller led the Trojans with 23 kills on a match-high 58 attempts. Emily Corrigan recorded 15 kills and had a double-double with 12 digs. Five Mountaineers posted double-digit digs to help suppress Troy's attack percentage.
Â
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they host Arkansas State at Trojan Arena at 6 p.m.
