Troy Opens Weekend with Loss at Alabama
9/11/2015 1:30:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team opened play at the Crimson-White Tournament on Friday, falling to host Alabama in three sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22), at Foster Auditorium.
Â
Troy (5-4) hit just .111 in the match, including an .030 mark in a first set that didn't start well for the Trojans. Darby Griff posted a team-high seven kills and tied for team-high honors with a .417 attack percentage. Sara Landis also hit .417.
Â
Troy started slowly, falling into a 10-2 hole in the first set, and never fully recovered. Troy got within five points in that first, but never closer as Alabama (3-5) took the first set, 25-19, thanks in large part to nine Troy errors.
Â
The Trojans were down just 14-12 in the second set, but Alabama, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, scored six straight to take control before winning the set, 25-15.
Â
As has been the case in most of their matches this season, the Trojans came out of the break on fire, taking a 4-0 lead in the third set. However, the Crimson Tide fought back and tied the score, 9-9. From there it was close, but with Troy trailing 20-19, Alabama scored three straight to take control before winning, 25-22.
Â
Troy entered the match holding opponents to a Sun Belt-low .133 attack percentage, but Alabama hit .244 in the match with three players hitting .400 or better.
Â
Troy returns to play at the Crimson White Tournament on Saturday with matches against Virginia and Saint Louis. The Trojans and Cavaliers will paly at 11 a.m. before Troy and Saint Louis play at 4 p.m.
