Troy Drops Two to Close Crimson-White Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. โ The Troy volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to close play at the Crimson-White Tournament, hosted by Alabama at Foster Auditorium.ย The Trojans lost in four sets to Virginia then lost in three sets to Saint Louis.

Troy (5-6), who dropped all three of its matches in the tournament, was led on the day by Blair Winston who posted a combined 31 kills in the two matches.ย Ali Dowdall recorded a combined 36 digs in the two matches.
ย
The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Mercer for a non-conference match up.ย Troy will then open Sun Belt play on Friday and Saturday at Trojan Arena against Appalachian State and Arkansas State, respectively.

Winston recorded 22 kills, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start as the Trojans fell in four sets to Virginia, 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 28-30, 25-21).
ย
Winston had a match-high 48 attack attempts and hit .292 thanks to her 22 kills and eight errors.ย She and Sara Landis both hit over .290 for a Troy team that posted a .191 attack percentage in the match.ย
ย
Reina Terry recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs while Ali Dowdall posted a match-high 24 digs for the Trojans.
ย
Troy saw Virginia (5-2) hit .348 in the first set and the Trojans couldn't manage much in a 25-13 loss.ย The Trojans then committed seven attack errors in a second set that saw the Cavaliers commit only one, giving Virginia a 25-20 win.

However, the last two sets were much closer, featuring a combined 27 ties and 13 lead changes.ย Troy recorded 20 kills in the third set and had to fight off a match point when Virginia led, 25-24.ย

The two sides went back-and-forth, then with the scored tied 28-28, Troy got a kill from Winston and another from Darby Griff for a 30-28 win.

The fourth set featured 11 ties, including as late as 18-18.ย However, from there, Virginia scored six of seven points to take control before winning the final set, 25-21.

Haley Kole's 13 kills led three Cavaliers that posted double-digit kills in the match.

Troy closed the tournament with a three-set loss to Saint Louis, 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-16), falling to a Billiken team that went undefeated on the weekend.

Winston posted a team-high nine kills, but the Trojans hit just .011 as a team in the match with 24 kills and 23 attack errors.
ย
The Trojans posted a negative percentage in the opening set and saw Saint Louis take a 25-10 win to start the match.ย The second set featured 13 ties, including as late as 17-17.ย However, Saint Louis (6-5) scored five straight to take control on their way to a 25-19 win.

Troy then hit .026 in a third set that saw the Trojans fall victim to an early eight-point run by Saint Louis.ย That run gave the Billikens a 13-5 lead on their way to a 25-16 win.
