Cross Country Heads to Azalea City Classic on Friday

MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy University men's and women's cross country teams will return to action this Friday, September 11, at the Azalea City Classic in Mobile. Hosted by conference rival South Alabama, the meet will take place at the Greater Gulf State Fair Grounds – another flat, fast course that should help the Trojans set solid marks in their first 6K and 8K races of the season.
The women's 6K, which includes competitors from Alabama State, Mobile, South Alabama and Southern Mississippi, will begin at 5:05 p.m. The men's 8K will proceed at 5:45 p.m. and feature runners from Alabama State, Florida A&M, Mobile and South Alabama. Last year, the Jaguars were led by junior Christoph Graf, who won the men's meet and helped South Alabama secure the win with 22 points.
"With the first race under our belt, we can start to focus on some of the race strategies that we hope to perfect by championship season," cross country head coach Elliott Blount said. "With such a young group of runners I'm hoping to see things start to click in terms of executing the race plan."
In 2014, the Trojan men and women both took fourth overall at the meet. On the women's side, senior Julia Ostendorf will look to improve on her 8th-place finish at last year's Azalea Classic as Mikayla Hodges aims to continue her successful start to the season as the Trojan women's top finisher last weekend. Joining them will be junior Katrina Bokenfohr, freshman Krystin Guirey, junior Rae Leach, junior Samantha Smith, junior Keaton Wallace and sophomore Sara Zylstra.
The men's team looks forward to the return of junior Tim Bulger, who will help add seniority to a strong group of freshmen that earned four of the five scoring spots for the Trojan men last week. Brennan Garriques and Brad Dixon, the freshmen that crossed the line first and second, respectively, for Troy at the JSU Struts Opener, will sit out this meet to rest. In their stead, freshman Ryan DeGale will get a chance to make his season debut. Freshman Zachary Bias, sophomore Eric Schueller, freshman Sawyer Sprung, junior Sean Kent and freshman Austin Gray will also make the trip to Mobile to represent Troy.
Stay tuned for final results, which will be posted on troytrojans.com. Fans can keep up with the action by following Troy track and field and cross country on Twitter @TroyTrojanXC_TF and Instagram @troytrojanstfxc.
