Troy Volleyball Dominates Fifth Set in Win Over UAB
9/1/2015 9:07:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
TROY, Alabama – It took five sets, but Troy dominated the final set in a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-6) win over UAB at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night. The win was just the second for Troy against the Blazers and the first since 2002.
Â
Blair Winston led a balanced Troy offensive attack with 13 kills, including three of Troy's four fifth-set kills. Troy (2-2) held UAB to an outstanding -.348 attack percentage in the final set, thanks largely to 5.0 total team blocks.
Â
Darby Griff and Leah Causey finished with team highs of seven blocks each for the Trojans, helping hold UAB to a .064 attack percentage over the entire match. Ali Dowdall's 30 digs also helped in the defensive effort, the fourth 30-dig match of her career.
Griff also made a mark offensively, hitting a match-best .462 thanks to 12 kills and no errors on 26 attempts, leading Troy to an overall hitting percentage of .205 for the match. Sara Landis also posted double-digit kills for the Trojans with 12 kills.
Â
Reina Terry and Alisha Hinrichs posted 29 and 21 assists, respectively, for Troy while Terry also posted a double-double with 14 digs.
Â
"Both teams played well and I thought it was a really well contested match," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I think that our conditioning, especially from this past weekend, pulled us through in the end. We made plays in the end of the match that we weren't making at some points earlier in the game. Our team pulled together, and I'm really proud of them for that."
Â
Troy held UAB (2-2) to a -.059 attack percentage in the first set and took the early lead with a 25-20 win. The Blazers tied the match up with a 25-20 win themselves in the second set.
Â
The Troy defense stepped up in the third set, holding UAB to a .000 attack percentage with 10 kills and 10 errors. The Trojans then seemed poised to clinch the match, leading 16-10 in the fourth set. However, despite 17 fourth-set kills from Troy, UAB fought back and took a 27-25 decision to force the fifth set.
Â
Gabby Deshotel led UAB with 23 kills and a .225 attack percentage on 71 attempts.
Â
Troy returns home on Friday when it begins the two-day Trojan Invitational. The tournament will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday with the Trojans taking the court at 6 p.m. to battle CSU Bakersfield. Alabama State and ETSU will join the Trojans and Roadrunners for the four-team event.
