Griff, Winston Lead Troy Past CSU Bakersfield

TROY, Alabama – Darby Griff and Blair Winston combined for 27 kills and just three errors as the Troy volleyball team beat CSU Bakersfield, 3-1 (25-10, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24), on Friday at the Trojan Invitational inside Trojan Arena.

Griff posted 13 kills and zero errors on 21 attempts to record a .619 attack percentage. Troy (3-2) posted a .248 attack percentage as a team, thanks in large part to Griff who went errorless with at least 12 kills for the second straight match.

Winston tied for match-high honors with 14 kills and hit .289 for Troy. Alisha Hinrichs led the Trojans with 22 assists while Reina Terry posted 14 assists.

Troy, a much-improved blocking team thus far in 2015, posted 9.0 blocks as a team, led by six from Leah Causey. The junior had four in the first set as Troy dominated Bakersfield (0-5), winning 25-10.

"It was an up and down performance," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "In the first game we came out and really played well. In the second game we still played well, but made a couple more errors and they made a couple more plays.Â

"In the third game we came out flat and they just jumped all over us. We really had to battle in that fourth game to get a win, and I'm proud that we were able to do that."

Troy needed just nine kills to win the first set, but got 13 with just two errors in the second set to beat the reigning WAC champion, 25-20.

The Roadrunners fought back and won the third set, 25-16, but Troy fought hard in a fourth set that featured 13 ties and six lead changes. Troy dropped down 18 kills in the fourth, including two straight from Winston when the score was tied 24-24, giving Troy the 26-24 win.

Edithza Urias led Bakersfield with 14 kills and a .353 attack percentage.

Troy returns to the court on Saturday at the Trojan Invitational. The Trojans will take on Alabama State at 12 p.m. and ETSU at 2:30 p.m. The tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with a match between Bakersfield and ETSU.
