Troy Hosts UAB in Tuesday's Season Opener

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team will open its home schedule on Tuesday when in-state rival UAB visits Trojan Arena for a 6 p.m. contest. Admission to all home volleyball matches is free.

Troy (1-2) is coming off of a three-match opening weekend at the Chattanooga Classic. The Trojans defeated Eastern Kentucky in four sets on Friday in their season opener. Troy then fell to host Chattanooga in four sets and Valparaiso in three sets on Saturday.

Ali Dowdall was named to the Chattanooga Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 5.55 digs per set on the weekend. The senior libero played in all 11 of Troy's sets, posting 61 digs and no reception errors.

On the front line, Darby Griff recorded 14 blocks and Sara Landis posted 11 on the weekend for the Trojans, averaging 1.27 and 1.00 per set, respectively.

Offensively, Symone Shaw and Blair Winston led the Trojans as they averaged 2.55 and 2.50 kills per set, respectively. Reina Terry and Alisha Hinrichs set up the Troy offense with 66 and 38 assists, respectively.

UAB (2-1) played three matches in the Lamar Invitational last weekend. The Blazers defeated Marist in three sets on Friday before falling to Lamar in three sets later that evening. UAB closed the weekend with a five-set win over Texas Southern.

The Blazers went 8-24 a season ago, including a 4-12 record in Conference USA play. UAB returns five starters from that team and has been picked to finish 12th in the league this season.

Troy and UAB are playing each other for the first time since 2011. In its Division I era, Troy is 1-16 against UAB with the lone win coming in 2002. Since then, the Blazers have won six straight meetings.
