8/29/2015 5:32:00 PM | Volleyball
Trojans return home to host UAB on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Â
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Troy volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday at the Chattanooga Classic, falling to host Chattanooga and Valparaiso at Maclellan Gym.
Â
Troy (1-2) first fell to Chattanooga, 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-11), before falling to Valparaiso, a 20-match winner last season, 3-0 (25-18, 25-29, 25-21).
Â
"We played two really good teams today," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "Valpo is a perennial 20-match winner and Chattanooga has a really talented group. We saw some things to work between now and Tuesday. We are excited for Tuesday and really hope all of our fans turn out to Trojan Arena for a great match."
Â
After a three-match opening weekend on the road, Troy will come home to host UAB at Trojan Arena on Tuesday at 6 p.m.  Troy will then host the Trojan Invitational on Friday and Saturday when Alabama State, CSU Bakersfield and ETSU visit Trojan Arena.

Chattanooga 3, Troy 1Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
The Trojans opened their day against the host Chattanooga Mocs, and after a great second set, couldn't carry the momentum in a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-11) loss.
Â
Troy hit .323 in its second-set win, but hit just .151 in the match overall as Chattanooga (1-1) hit .266. Troy got nine kills from both Leah Causey and Darby Griff to lead the way.
Â
Defensively, Ali Dowdall, an all-tournament team selection, posted 20 digs, giving her 20 digs for the second time this season in two attempts. However, unlike their win against Eastern Kentucky on Friday when they had 13.0 total team blocks, the Trojans had just 5.0 against Chattanooga.
Â
After Troy's second-set win, the two sides played a very tight third set that featured seven ties and three lead changes. The Mocs called a timeout with a 20-19 lead, and from there Troy only scored two more points as Chattanooga took control of the match.
Â
The Trojans couldn't recover in the fourth set and Chattanooga jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Troy only managed to hit .038 in the final set and the Mocs hit .355 on their way to match-clinching win.
Â
Valparaiso 3, Troy 0
Â
Troy seemed to get back into the match, but Valparaiso came from behind to win the third set, and the match, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-21), in Troy's second contest of the day.
Â
After dropping the first two sets, the Trojans came out of the locker room on fire and led Valpo (3-0) by a score of 16-9 in the third set. However, the Crusaders quickly clawed back and scored 14 of the next 17 points to take a 22-19 lead on their way to a 25-21, match-clinching win.
Â
Troy hit just .078 on the night and hit .000 in the second set with seven kills and seven errors. Troy was led offensively by seven kills from both Symone Shaw and Sara Landis.Â
Â
Dowdall again led the Trojans with 17 digs. Griff and Causey both posted a team-best four blocks as Troy posted 8.0 total as a team.
Â
Valparaiso, who has won 20-plus matches in 13 straight seasons, completed the weekend undefeated to win the Chattanooga Classic.
