Trojans Set for Historic Penn Relays

PHILADELPHA, Pennsylvania – In the last regular week of competition before the Sun Belt Championships, the Troy track and field team will be covering ground at two meets, starting with the Penn Relays.

Beginning Thursday, Troy will be represented at the Penn Relays at the historic Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn Relays are the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States and have been held annually since 1895.
Â
The event regularly draws more than 15,000 participants representing high schools, universities, and elite runners from all over the world. The Trojans will be in the company of fellow Alabama schools Auburn and UAB.

Corina Cox will compete in the women's discus throw championship on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Cox currently ranks 37th in the NCAA rankings in the event, and ranks second in the Sun Belt, in thanks to her 52.48-meter throw at the Alabama Relays on March 19.

On Thursday, the first Troy athlete to compete will be Jaevyn Wortham, who will take part in the women's discus throw at 8:00 a.m. Wortham is ranked seventh in the conference from her record setting performance at last week's War Eagle Invitational.

Alexus Cobbs and Aleeah Stigarll will represent the Trojans in the women's long jump later on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Both Cobbs and Stigarll are tied for sixth in the conference in the event with 5.71-meter jumps at the War Eagle Invitational and Tiger Track Classic, respectively. On Friday, Cobbs will once again represent Troy in the women's triple jump at 8:30 a.m.

The Trojan women will take part in three relays during the event, with a team competing in the 4x100 heats on Thursday at 12:10 p.m., and the 4x400 heats the same day at 5:25 p.m. On Friday, the Trojans will run in the 4x200 heats at 1:00 p.m.

Troy's men's team will compete on the final day of the meet in both the hammer throw and javelin. Freshman Joevar James will take part in the men's javelin throw on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. James is currently ranked fifth in the Sun Belt in the event.

Senior Demetris Elia, who ranks sixth in the conference in the hammer throw, is slated compete for the Trojans in the event at 2:15 p.m., on Saturday.

The Trojans will also field a team at the Golden Eagle Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss. beginning on Saturday.Â
