Troy Softball Falls to Texas State in Series Finale

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy softball team fell to Texas State, 4-3, in the rubber match on Sunday at the Bobcat Softball Complex.

Texas State (24-19, 8-6 Sun Belt) won the game on a walk-off double from Ariel Ortiz that scored Kelli Baker in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Troy (25-19, 8-7 Sun Belt) started off the second inning with a double to center field by Carli Kayler, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Davis. Kate Benton singled to third base to get Kayler home and gave Troy a 1-0 lead.

With two outs and the game tied at one in the top of the third inning, Kayler got her second hit of the game, a bases loaded double that scored Ashley Rainey and Michelle Phelps and gave the Trojans a 3-1 lead.

The Bobcats scored two, one on a single from Kendall Wiley and another on a double from Taylor Webb, in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at three.

Jaycee Affeldt (13-7) took the loss for Troy as she pitched 3.1 innings of relief work. Rainey got the start in the circle and only allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out two in three innings of work.

Kayler finished the day 2-for-3 with a single, double and two RBIs. Hannah Day, Becca Hartley, Kate Benton and Phelps all had hits in the game.

The Trojans continue their road trip on Tuesday as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for a game with Florida A&M. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.
